If you are new to Hammerspoon, read the Getting Started Guide with reference to the full API documentation. You will need to create a Lua script in ~/.hammerspoon/a using our APIs and standard Lua APIs. Out of the box, Hammerspoon does nothing.

How do I install it?ĭownload the latest release and then drag the application to /Applications/. You might want to do something crazy like have iTunes automatically start playing when your Mac detects you are in Paris. You might want to display an alert when your battery drops below a certain percentage. You might want to run a series of commands when your wifi interface connects to your home network. You might want to bind a keyboard shortcut to a series of window operations, or an applescript. Typically you would write a configuration file in Lua that connects events to actions. You can write Lua code that interacts with macOS APIs for applications, windows, mouse pointers, filesystem objects, audio devices, batteries, screens, low-level keyboard/mouse events, clipboards, location services, wifi, and more. What gives Hammerspoon its power is a set of extensions that expose specific pieces of system functionality, to the user. At its core, Hammerspoon is just a bridge between the operating system and a Lua scripting engine. But I will have to get started first, right.This is a tool for powerful automation of macOS. Of course this is just a subset of the stuff I want to talk about in this series. I even run Linux X11-based GUI Applications with the help of the XQuartz project on my mac. Well, Docker let’s you run almost all (Dev) Tools under the sky, mostly Linux based, in container environments. This is a worthy and professional grade set of Application (Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher) to replace the Adobe Creative Cloud Design suite. When you add the workflow capabilities to it though, sky is the limit. It is an App launcher, search tool, bookmark, snippets & clipboard manager etc. On the surface one might think that Alfred.app is just a replacement for the macOS built in Spotlight. Hammerspoon is another fantastic application, that extends your mac functionality mostly through the incredible automation chops. It takes a list as input and lets you fuzzy search/match the lines in the list and spits out the selection(s) to the stdout. I am not even at 40% of what Vim can do, but I imagine myself to be way way faster than I was around 1,5 years ago before I got “baptized”. One can fly around thousend of lines of code/text in a giffy. Nothing beats Vim’s modal text editing power (I use Evil in Emacs as well, ssshhh!). You know what, I take back the “might”, this is a definite “does”. Which by itself might merit a post in the future.
